7 . THE MERCEDES-BENZ THREE-POINT LOGO ALMOST HAD A FOURTH POINT ADDED

10 THINGS ABOUT MERCEDES

The brainchild of the sons of Gottlieb Daimler, Paul and Adolf Daimler, the original Mercedes-Benz logo was a gold star. Inspiration for this design came from a symbol used by their father to mark family postcards. Through the evolution of Mercedes-Benz, the logo was altered and eventually became a white star at the center of a thick circular border with detailing around the edges.

Today, a silver circle with a Three-Pointed Star in the center is now recognized as the Mercedes-Benz logo. While the logo meaning was rooted in family, it now has come to represent the strength and prevalence of Daimler engines on the land, on the sea, and in the air. The Three-Pointed Star is now proudly displayed on new Mercedes-Benz vehicles all around Rancho Cucamonga and Fontana as either a stand-up hood ornament or a stamp embedded in the grille.

Discussions were on-going about adding a fourth point but it never happened.

8 . THE S CLASS NOW COMES WITH A PERFUMING SYSTEM

10 THINGS ABOUT MERCEDES
If I could bottle the scent of my (very used) first car, it would be something like Eau de French Fries and Shoes. No amount of royal pine Little Trees hanging from the rearview could mask it. Mercedes-Benz has now come up with a whole new level of car fragrance. The new ($100,000+) 2014 S-Class sedans come with the ($350) option of a built-in fragrance atomizer and four custom colognes.

Located in the glove box, the “active perfuming system” can be turned on and off by the driver, who can also control the intensity (low, medium, or high). The perfumed air passes into the cabin of the car through the A/C vents in five-minute intervals. You can choose from four exclusive interior fragrances created with perfumer Marc vom Ende: Freeside Mood (light citrus), Nightlife Mood (spice, oud), Downtown Mood (floral, musk), and Sports Mood (green, citrus). Each scent was created to complement the leathery smell of a new car, and Mercedes swears that the scents won’t transfer to your clothing. Each atomizer lasts for a few months and can be replaced (for $110) at Mercedes dealers. The fragrance system also includes an empty glass vial to fill with any alcohol-based perfume of your choosing. (Perhaps the scent of money? Hey, it exists.) And if the aromatherapy feature isn’t enough, the new S-class comes with a hot stone massage feature in the seats, too—it’s a luxury spa on wheels.

9 . THE MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG HAS EXPLOSIVE DOORS

10 THINGS ABOUT MERCEDES
It’s a sad fact that incredibly expensive, highly desirable cars have to be smashed to bits in the name of safety, but we have to admit we quietly enjoy watching the carnage. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG had to endure its time with the crash barrier, the $200,000 supercar can hold its own against the international wall of destruction. The offset impact crash showed that virtually all of the energy was absorbed by its long front end while the cockpit remained largely intact. But what if the SLS flipped on its lid, rendering the gullwing doors inoperable?

In order to comply with federal standards that mandate that a door must be operational in the event of a rollover crash, MB built explosive charges into the hinge pins so that the doors could be blown off in the event of a rollover.

In the event of a real-wold crash, yanking on the door handles would trigger the explosives once the SLS AMG was upside-down for a pre-determined amount of time.

10 . MERCEDES-BENZ CREATED A SELF DRIVING SEMI TRUCK

10 THINGS ABOUT MERCEDES
On 3 July 2014, the secret was aired: with the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, Daimler Trucks unveiled the transport system of the future. The truck of tomorrow will drive itself. The road there is being paved by assistance and telematics systems that are already in use today. These were brought together in a highly intelligent system called “Highway Pilot”.

The result: increased safety, lower fuel consumption and also improved working conditions for professional truck drivers. And improved vehicle/transport management and app-based solutions will enable fleet operators to save money.

Yet the pioneer among autonomously driving trucks is not just intelligent. The engineers at Daimler Trucks have given it not just a futuristic exterior, but a new life in the interior, fewer controls and more freedom of movement.
